History of GMC
So, how exactly did GMC get its start, and what does "GMC" stand for? The answer to both of those questions isn't entirely simple. GMC traces its origins back to 1902 when Max Grabowsky made his very first sale to the American Garment Cleaning Company of Detroit. As his auto-making company quickly grew that year, the Grabowsky Motor Vehicle Company, which is often what many people think GMC stands for, was rebranded as the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company.
By 1909, General Motors (GM) founder William C. Durant held significant amounts of the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company's stock and brought the company under GM's corporate ownership that same year. In 1912, new trucks began displaying the GMC logo, which stands for "General Motors Truck Company."
GMC would quickly become an American automotive icon, playing an important role in World War One with its Model 16 becoming the standard battlefield ambulance truck. After answering the call of duty for America again during World War Two with its legendary six-wheel drive military trucks, GMC shifted its focus to everyday pickup trucks, vans, and SUVs.
